Stop Suffering and Become a Self-actualized Person

Are you feeling anxious, stressed, or somewhat lost in life? Maybe it is time for you remove all the distractions, stop suffering from prolonged negative emotional state and realize your full potential. Become a self-actualized person with highest level of psychological development, as Abraham Maslow wrote in his book “Motivation and Personality” (1954).

According to Maslow, self-actualized individuals have certain key characteristics:

  1. Self-Awareness: They have a clear perception of their own personalities, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. They understand who they are, what they can do, and what they want to achieve.

  2. Authenticity: They are genuine and honest, not only with others but with themselves as well. They act in ways consistent with what they believe and feel.

  3. Spontaneity: They can behave naturally and spontaneously, often displaying a childlike but not childish enthusiasm and wonder.

  4. Problem-Centering: They tend to focus on problems outside themselves, often concerned with basic issues and eternal questions of human nature and the universe.

  5. Acceptance: They accept their own human nature with all its flaws. The same acceptance applies to others.

  6. Autonomy: They are independent and not reliant on external factors or other people for their satisfaction and self-worth. They find gratification in personal growth.

  7. Peak Experiences: They have frequent peak experiences, which are moments of extreme joy, wonder, and awe. These moments bring feelings of being one with life or the universe.

  8. Continued Freshness of Appreciation: They continuously appreciate the simple things in life. They maintain a constant freshness of appreciation of the world.

  9. The Need for Privacy: They value solitude and enjoy spending time alone, using it for self-reflection and personal growth.

  10. Democratic Values and Attitudes: They feel a kinship with others and an affinity for people in general. They have strong empathetic relationships and can be deeply moved by the welfare of others.

  11. Strong Ethical Sense: They have a clear sense of right and wrong, along with a sense of duty to help others.

  12. Humility and Respect: They respect and appreciate the intrinsic value in all people.

Remember, self-actualization is a process, not an end state. It involves continuous growth and change throughout one's life. Maslow believed that everyone has the potential to reach a state of self-actualization, although it often requires dealing with and resolving various other psychological needs first.

Here are five action items you can take to stop suffering and start your journey of becoming a self-actualized person.

  1. Develop Self-Awareness: Practice mindfulness, introspection, and self-reflection. Recognize your strengths, weaknesses, emotions, values, and beliefs. Understand your needs and motivations. Journaling, meditation, or therapy can aid in this process.

  2. Seek Personal Growth: Never stop learning. Continually challenge yourself to learn new things, develop new skills, and step outside of your comfort zone. Seek experiences that will help you grow on a personal level.

  3. Practice Authenticity: Be true to yourself in all situations. Honor your feelings and thoughts, and don't be afraid to express them. Do not compromise your values or integrity to fit in or please others. Live your life according to what is truly meaningful to you.

  4. Cultivate Healthy Relationships: Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who respect and value you for who you are. Nurture relationships that encourage mutual growth. At the same time, practice empathy, respect, and kindness towards all people, not just those close to you.

  5. Pursue Peak Experiences: Seek out experiences that give you a sense of awe, wonder, or deep joy. This could involve spending time in nature, pursuing creative activities, engaging in spiritual practices, or any other activities that make you feel deeply connected to life or the universe.

Again, remember, self-actualization is a lifelong journey, not a destination. It's about ongoing growth and self-improvement. Stay patient with yourself and understand that everyone's path to self-actualization will be unique. Many motivation speakers, self-development authors, and psychologists are still referring to Maslow’s framework these days. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of “Motivation and Personality” and deep dive on this subject. Stop suffering and become a self-actualized person.
